[About this blog] Inspired by local soccer player Mike Lim during my rookie reporter days at Singapore Polytechnic, I set up this blog in August 2002. I feel that blogging is a novel platform to document interesting facets of my life and my thoughts on certain issues. [Email blogger] ephraim@singnet.com.sg

[naked truths]
i watched my first R(A) movie: naked ambition....

yes....don't remind me of the 50 topless asian models strutting their stuff.... it was quite a funny movie with some lessons taught..... and no, it wasn't because you could see the erect tits of the models... (don't make me go into succient details)

i actually brought my digital camera in.... but no guesses on what i did with it.... i could have shot up to 10 minutes of footage.... did i? go figure...

anyway, it brings me back to the point.... what reporters write and what gets printed plays a heavy role on the reader.... news is powerful as advetistments such that it creates a strong impact on the reader....

my journalism skills lecturer says that if you expose the reader to certain things daily, one day he might follow what you say even if he stongly does not believe.... why? simply because you are exposed to it on a regular basis such that you believe it in the long run....

eg. if you keep on telling teenagers to read papers and know about current affairs and if you tell them to go for such events because it's fun... THEY WILL....

that brings me to stereotyping... how did you associate a witch as a bad person? how about men with long beards and unkempt hair?

cartoons that we are exposed to at a young age are the cause of it.... who killed snow white? a witch.... who is popeye's enemy? bluto the guy with beard bristles on his chin... they look harmless to us but plays on the minds of children...

and now something to think about.... did the creator of popeye want to make kids love to eat spinach when he created the series?

he probably made eating spinach look so cool in the cartoon that it probably played an impact on the kids.....

did you mum want to introduce racism by telling you to be quiet and stop crying when you were young.... otherwise the mang kali (black guy) would catch you....

is that why we are so afraid of them now? or is that the cause why some condemn them now....

point to ponder: are all indians road sweepers? or is it because we are told from young "study or you'll end up like them" that we remember so clearly.... go figure... i'll leave it to you....

[celebrate celebs]
filming of the mission 3 was fun.... throw in all the celebs and seeing them battle it out made it all worthwhile to stay along boon tat street's smoky and teary environment....

under journalist ben's orders (he did the story angle) photog yours truly had to capture the right photo to accompany the article... afterall, a picture paints a thousand words..... and no, ben's article can't reach that amount of words so there you go... he needed me to take a photo!! haha....

witnessed a lot of stuff in one night... patricia mok had to deal with an auntie who made a daring request.... all in all, they obliged with photos and autographs....

meanwhile, you could see that sharon was upset at the sales.... from the upbeat tempo she had at the start of the shoot to a soft and bochup voice towards the end... you could really see the word "tired" plastered on her face....

and when the cameras started rolling.... she spoke in trickles.... tough being a celeb eh?

and guess what? when i introduced myself as an sp reporter to patricia.... she commented that i look a lot like one...

"Look at your face can tell that you are reporter la!", she chuckled... (however ben thinks otherwise and dissed the remark)

and answered my questions with tact...

then, we headed over to the nyp side.... and chatted with sharon and posed for photos with jeff too...

both the celebs on the nyp side were so busy as fans asked for countless photos and autographs...

the best part was to really see the stuff going on... the cameras, the mics and the lights...

poor ben got grilled on why he chose to support the nyp side by the tv camera!! (you know i learnt in advertising that there is no such thing as customer loyalty these days and that customers jump ship at the sign of a new offer)

so we waited earnestly as i chatted to friendly guy dasmond koh....

as soon as the finished the last shoot, we thronged towards the sp stall for our pics.... (it was easy as cheery pat had promised me a group photo earlier on)

what a day... erm, night i mean...

check out the exclusive video here before the ep is aired....

[surprise surprise]
was at work today and was surprised to find an eod (explosive ordnance disposal) vehicle parked at my workshop....

the task at hand was to change the headlights and indicator light bulbs because mediacorp would be using the vehicle fo filming purposes...

filiming? i was shocked.... in an saf camp? i was excited....

i though the driver was pulling my leg and little did he know i was interested in such stuff.... such a privilege to repair a vehicle used for a tv serial....

anyway, me being the super nice guy, did my best to complete my job and passed the vehicle out in double quick time....

then, as i wanted to satisfy my curiousity, i headed on my bicycle and plonked myself right beside the crew at the battalion blocks some few hundreds of meters away.... and there i laid, watching earnestly hearing the director shouting his orders....

some familiar faces set to appear in this drama include phyllis quek, tay ping hui and dasmond koh.... you heard it from here first okay!!!

[sai kang party]
there was an out camp run today and everyone booked out last night....

except for me....

yours truly was so proactive and volunteered to be in charge of the water point.... turns out that i have to be in camp at 5am!!! and that's not all.... the rest booked out last night while i booked in!! such a crappy mistake....

okay... now for the positive part.... although i had lesser sleep as i booked in at midnight we kindof got free flow of gardenia buns... i had almost 10 of those and tried every single flavour.....

and while the others were busy running, i was chomping away at the buns... haha....

not too bad lah.... returned to camp around 1130hrs and was the first to leave camp... however, when i was almost home, the rest of the mates were already back..... i'll make a new resolution not to help do sai kang man.... volunteered somemore.... they'd better reward me somehow....

here's a lil message from a camp driver:
orange daisies in a field of a dream
flowers sent for a friend fallen ill
lavenders retured for a gift
their stems hallow come dry and wilt
expressions are just that
intentions rather slack
don't expect them to love you back
don't expect springtime in your sack

[egoistic]
such a busy week.... my lecturer at MDIS tells me that journalists love it when they see their names in the papers... but, it's a lot of hard work i tell you.... you go for an event, interview people, take photos and still have to file the story the very next day....

but i agree to the egoistic part.... many a time, when an issue is published, i'll be looking forward to see the final print... it's like a monthly report card!! a lot of time and hard work is dedicated to it.... and when you see people reading it, you get job satisfaction....

that's how it really feels.... and i dread to think of the days when i can't get this satisfaction anymore....

meanwhile, i'll be honing my photography skills..... and i'll still keep looking out for scoops.....

if you have any suggestions, queries, comments just chat with me kay? i'd love to hear from you guys and gals (see sidebar)

[area cleaning]
oh yes.... don't remind me.... talk about sweeping the old and welcoming the new and i'd get frustrated... we had mass area cleaning in camp today.... however me and my buddy decided to have a snooze in the bunk instead of actually spring cleaning.....

we were totally shocked and surprised to see our csm pop his head in.... you should have seen the look on our faces..... darn, we could have been dead meat....

he turned on the lights and spotted a cobweb dangling from the light! and that was all thanks to my cleaning skills the previous night...

then he boomed in a loud voice: "Ephraim, what is that dangling from the light?"

so i replied:"Dust, sir!" almost in a startling fright

"waiting for new year ah?" he said....

and the rest they say is history! luckily my buddy leonard and i didn't get any extra duties....

having said so much, guilty as i was, i decided to make my room spick and span the moment i got home.... and i'm still in the midst of cleaning....

guess i learnt my lesson..... hehe.....

funny why they always associate cleaning with new year..... hmmm....

[blasting new year]
tired. yes i am. poor me. steph song declined to be interviewed by me..... okay, so she thinks i'm just such a lowly reporter not worthy to even speak to her? if that's the case, then it's her loss lor... even big celebs like li lin love me....

just came back from SP's NYE countdown party at the plaza.... so you ask why sp? you mean there are no better ones? well the answer is a simple four-lettered word.... and no, it does not begin with "F"..... work lah.... on new year's day.... some are so priviliged to enjoy on this day... anyway, i'm prepared to sacrifice my hols....

luckily, i did not have to work on christmas day.... for me, christmas is a time to be with the family.... and new year is the time to be wild with friends.... and so they say what you do on the first day of the new year will set the pace for the year ahead....

yup.... i am really stressed with my studies, work, ns and love life.... going crazy soon man if i continue like this.... sadly, almost the whole family has gone on vacation.... why didn't i join them... haiZ.... too late....

oh crap.... why am i saying all this on new year's day... haha... be happy... and yes, here's wishing everyone a happy new year.... thanks for the many sms-es.... i replied every single one of them..... that's me kay....

all the best for the new year.... and thanks for your suggestion ben....
