[About this blog] Inspired by local soccer player Mike Lim during my rookie reporter days at Singapore Polytechnic, I set up this blog in August 2002. I feel that blogging is a novel platform to document interesting facets of my life and my thoughts on certain issues. [Email blogger] ephraim@singnet.com.sg

[National Day Carnival]
1. Instead of the usual National Day dinner, we had a carnival instead - simple food, games, balloons, candy floss, scrabbles, the lot. The turnout was much better than the organisers had expected. The weather was kind. Towards the evening, it was cool and the crowds swelled. Many came from other parts of Singapore, probably because they were visiting relatives. Parents and grandparents brought young children along. Lucinda and her team did a great job organising the many activities.

2. I gave short speeches in Malay, Chinese and English. The Malay and Chinese speeches are posted below. In English, I talked about the change in our national mood. Singaporeans are feeling more buoyant now with the economic growth. There is a sense that many things are falling into place and that the policies of the last few years are finally bearing fruit. From a regional city, we are becoming an international metropolis, a London of Asia. We have good reasons to be optimistic. But problems will arise from time to time. The recent financial volatility caused by the collapse of the subprime market in the US is a little worrying. But so long as we stay united, our future is bright. That was roughly what I said.

3. The shops and restaurants in the vicinity benefited from the additional people who came for the carnival. Indeed, the Hougang Central area has been enjoying a kind of boom in the last one year. The traffic jams are getting worse. There are not enough carparks. I've been working with the grassroots leaders, the Town Council, HDB and LTA on ways to improve the flows. When the town was planned a long time ago, the MRT was not factored in. Once the MRT station was opened, the flow patterns changed. A few years ago, we did a major retrofit of the area. With the growth in traffic, we need to do another one in the next few years.

UCAPAN ENCIK GEORGE YEO, MENTERI EHWAL LUAR DAN ANGGOTA PARLIMEN BAGI GRC ALJUNIED, DI KARNIVAL HARI KEBANGSAAN BEDOK RESERVOIR-PUNGGOL PADA 11 OGOS 2007 JAM 5.00 PETANG

Saudara-saudara setanahair

4. Saya ucapkan Selamat Hari Kebangsaan kepada semua!
