[About this blog] Inspired by local soccer player Mike Lim during my rookie reporter days at Singapore Polytechnic, I set up this blog in August 2002. I feel that blogging is a novel platform to document interesting facets of my life and my thoughts on certain issues. [Email blogger] ephraim@singnet.com.sg

[preview]
was at the microsoft office last night playing the new x-box version of winning eleven 8!!! thanks to close pal zhiqi that i got to go for this exclusive preview...

i never really played so intensely before as i am not really a game fanatic... the people at microsoft had more than six sets of x-boxes and each had four controllers for the people present!!! so so cool... i could play with a pal against two others!!! and they also gave each guest an x-box polo tee...

you should feel lucky if you work for microsoft because their pantry is just like a mini cafe... it's like having a mini 7-11 at your workplace you know...

so don't miss the x-box version of winning eleven 8 as it hits stores next monday!!! it rocks... i think you can pre-order it too...

[almost chinese new year]
chinese new year is round the corner!!!

and so i went to chinatown to soak in the mood last week...

also watched shall we dance lately with the church guys and gals and it's quite a touching show... one thing really meaningful that was revealed in the show is the reason why people get married... kindof makes sense if you ask me...

why? it is because you want to have someone to witness your life - your ups and downs... your happy times your sad times and those really lonely times.... life would be pretty meaningless if it is only you walking down that road... so go get a partner...

so that's a little nugget from the movie that i liked.... overall it was fairly okay and was somewhat hilarious... and of course there was j.lo and her perky you know whats... go figure...

i also have been busy updating the mr & miss singapore polytechnic 04/05 website lately in case you want to know what i've been doing....

[reporter essentials]
apart from the necessary skills... a reporter has to be fully equipped for the job...

first of all.... the assignment brief that contains information on the story you are going to do.... sometimes there are press or media releases...

writing material to take down notes...

and a tape recorder and tapes if you need to quote people in verbatim... i use it when i do interviews with big shots... for example an interview with the president...

copies of the publication to distribute to others and for own reference...

and finally a good camera to take pictures...

[thanks for four great years]
the polylink days to the fullstop days... four years... what a long journey it has been...

it's a long time... i mean poly is three years and i have been with fullstop ever since it's inception... well... way before that too during the polylink days...

i published my first poem in the now defunct polylink in 2001... how time flies... it is now 2005...

the first team was a close-knit team... i remember jean, sharon, lisar, suhana, angelina and stephanie... we were the pioneers... haha... starting out with the first story interviewing mirai a three-piece girl group... what greenhorns we were then!! the then editor christine also wanted us to go round asking people for their opinions on certain issues on campus - our second story...

a few issues of polylink and then fullstop was born!!!

it was a daily affair just hanging out at christine's office brainstorming through names for the paper and learning more.... i also had the opportunity to have a first look at upcoming issues - reading through and spotting mistakes... it was a great learning experience starting from scratch...

then reporter yiling left the team to be the editor of sb's attitude newsletter... but we also had several additions like aaron, shunwen and yanping... haha...

fullstop was officially launched on 8 july 2002 with a blast... i will never forget that day!! i still have that issue with all our signatures framed up in my room... i also had my very own sp namecard!!

there were the spsu guys benson, yenling and bryan helping us out at the various points distributing the papers... of course not forgetting angelina and claire... how proud we were when we first saw our names in print!!!

starting out from the bottom was no mean feat... it was high point for me... from an engineering student knowing nothing at all about newspaper writing.... christine guided and moulded me throwing out my work a lot of times... it was hard work and sweat... it was challenging...

then when i was promoted to associate editor in 2003 i was really happy - all that writing and rewriting had paid off.... the other pioneers were all promoted to beat editors too... cindy an online reporter was roped into fullstop and the team was known as the sp newsroom... we each had our own beat and also a pool of junior reporters to coach...

i was put in charge of the beat editors with the task of co-ordinating the articles and making sure they are filed in time for print.... there was a lot of bonding that time... we worked as a team and played as a team but after one issue of that newsroom system, the crunch came... christine resigned...

march 2003 was the last time i edited as associate editor and from then on it was downhill all the way...

there was no mention of the associate editor post when the new editor chin kar took over... fullstop continued to go through revamps... i was still so called editing but without the title of associate editor in april 2003...

it was horrid... chin kar's first issue was full of errors... i failed to spot them... finally in september 2003 i was not editing any issue at all as i was busy with army...

soon after there were several additions including a promising reporter kenneth and there was also alex and stella....

it was fun attending the training session as the elite seven... jean, sharon, lisar, suhana, aaron, kenneth and me.... the team was still great then...

as time went by i felt left out... there were media interviews.... photo shoots all without me knowing... it was the darkest time in fullstop... kept in the dark totally... and i felt like giving up... as time went by i felt that the team was splitting up...

soon after we had new people like wenqi and valerie joining the team... on their first day at the screening of the movie after school i told valerie that i would leave the team soon after my interview with the president... it was perhaps the biggest thing that happened during that year.... and though i wanted to edit articles i never got to do it anymore...

it just didn't feel as fun as before as the days went by... i decided to leave eventually... but before i could leave the then editor chin kar left... he then moved on to be the editor of a new magazine titled choices....

it was shocking... and so i thought it was okay to continue as fullstop now had no editor... meanwhile i sought to improve.. i took up an advanced diploma in mass communications...

in june 2004 we had our annual training session again ... so it was amanda, valerie, aaron koh, kenneth and me at the third reporters training session...

our third editor aaron chong came on board during that time... he is one that knows how to make papers sell and get readers too.... content wise fullstop was going uphill... bonding wise we were going down as the team we started was just getting further and further apart...

i continued to write for fullstop... perhaps there was not much new blood or there was no one to keep the team together like i did before...

in november aaron koh was promoted to associate editor... he deserved it... and i was happy for him as i knew he would be the one to succeed me...

i'm still trying... trying to do my best writing articles of different genres... from commentary to feature to hard news.... trying to prove myself as a good writer.... humility i told myself... the audience already know me since the day i started out... they have seen me grow as i write... so no point asking for too much...

so in december 2004 i did a lot of articles like before... my passion is still there... my spirit is not dampened... i am still fighting on... it is still in my blood...

just hope one day my dream will come true... all i have is hope and your support... thanks for being with me these four years...

well anyway... those were the days...

2005 will be a year of change and major decisions to make.... and of course a new job....
